A nanowire is an extremely thin wire with a diameter of the order of a few nanometers or less, where 1 nm=10-9 meters. By comparison, the diameter of a human hair is about 500 times larger than 100 nm nanowire. Each nanowire acts basically as an individual light emitting diode (LED). Any Colour of the visible light spectrum, ranging from deep blue to red, can be realized using nanowire LEDs with industry standard semiconductor material and nanufacturing equipment. Many different types of nanowires exist, including superconducting eg. YBCO, metallic (Au, Ni, Pt), semiconducting (GaN, InP, Si) and insulating (SiO2, TiO2). Molecular nanowires are made up of repeating molecular units either organi (eg. DNA) or inorganic such as Mo6 S9-x'x, Li2 M06 Se6). Nanowires are synthesised by various methods such as Non-catalytic growth, suspension, solution phase synthesis and V.L.S. Growth. There is enhancement of the sensitivity of cardiae biomarters (eg. Troponin) detection directly from the serum for the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction with the use of nanowires. Nanowires are used in electronic devices. The semiconductor nanowires are also used in sensing of proteins and chemicals.
